One, two, three

About the Exhibition

Genie Kim has a way of making you slow down. In "One, two, three," the Korean-Canadian artist gathers work that begins in darkness and is drawn back toward light. She grounds her wood panels in mineral, covers them fully in charcoal, then works in reverse with an eraser, lifting forms out of the black until they hold. Numbers rise to the surface, counted and recounted, the way you might steady yourself before something happens. Here and there, small hearts of gold leaf catch whatever light is in the room.

The title comes from the words we say before a photograph, the little countdown that asks everyone to be present at once. That thread of attention runs through the show. Alongside the charcoal works sit a group of hand-built ceramic sculptures, pinched into being by hand, quiet and organic, carrying the same patience in a different body.

What stays with us is how tender all of it feels. Kim keeps count not to measure but to remember, and to ask us to hold still long enough to be here. We are glad to give this work a room, and glad you came to meet it. Count along. One, two, three, smile!

About the Artist

Genie Kim (b. Seoul, South Korea) is a Korean-Canadian artist based in Toronto. She earned her BFA from the School of Fine Arts at Hongik University in Seoul. Her work explores the love, sacrifice, and cyclical rhythms of Mother Nature, as well as the emotional restoration found through art. These themes first emerged in her painting series Mother Tree and Healing Flowers, and now continue through her ceramic sculpture and recent charcoal works.

In her charcoal drawings, Kim captures quiet, emotional landscapes that mirror the intimacy of her sculptural practice. Her ceramic works are hand-built using traditional pinch techniques, forming organic, meditative objects that echo the symbolic language of her earlier paintings. Both mediums emphasize softness, stillness, and subtle emotional resonance—inviting the viewer into a quiet space of reflection and connection.
